Description of School

Naranja Elementary is a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school with a student population of 691. The school is located in deep South Dade County and serves students from low socioeconomic areas. The school has a multi-ethnic population with 92% of the students on free or reduced lunch. The Naranja Elementary School staff and faculty are dedicated to providing a positive learning environment in order to foster academic growth in all students. We accept the challenge to improve overall levels of student performance in the areas of language arts,mathematics and science. Currently, we are in the process of wiring the building to provide school-wide Internet access.

 

Programs and Initiatives Presently Available at the School

K-2 (America Reads) is the Primary Academic Curriculum Enhancement program designed to provide an activity-based curriculum which uses the improvement of thinking skills as its central focus.

Star- 3-5 program is designed to increase student achievement through the use of Analysis Skills and Creative Thinking Skills by direct teaching of thinking and the infused teaching of thinking in language arts and mathematics.

 

K-1 The Waterford  Early Reading Program is a software program that integrates classroom-based assessment, and instructional activities to ensure the development of phonemic awarness and reading fluency. It is used in all kindergarten and first grade.

TEAM- Teaching Enrichment Activities to Minorities- is designed to provide instruction of higher order thinking skills to identified students in a self-contained classroom setting. TEAM integrates thinking skills instruction within all subjects to strengthen the thinking process of the students.

After School Tutorial program is tutorial assistance offered to students reading below grade level.

K-5 The Comprehensive Reading Plan (C.R.P.) provides teachers with resources, tips and connections to their grade level initiatives, and the new basal series while providing strategies that lay the foundation for thinking that supports the state reading standards. The program is used in kindergarten through fifth grades.

Reciprocal Reading Program refers to an instructional activity that takes place in the form of a dialogue between teachers and students regarding segments of text.

Gifted Magnet Program offers fourth or fifth grade students a wide variety of educational experiences utilizing special gifted teaching strategies. These include creative and critical thinking, problem solving, and the use of current technology.

Writing Across the Curriculum is a schoolwide writing program designed to enforce writing skills. Students take a pre/post test to measure growth in writing.
